The Cloudforge T7 is the grow-room version. At this volume of water one thing becomes important that is still negligible on a small humidifier, and that is what is dissolved in it.

Why the manufacturer specifies distilled water

An ultrasonic humidifier atomises water by vibrating it at high frequency. Everything dissolved in that water goes into the air with it: calcium, magnesium and the rest of what makes tap water hard.

It settles in two places. On your leaves, as a fine white film that blocks light and does not dissolve in the water you spray over it. And inside the unit, on the transducer plate, where scale makes atomising steadily less efficient until barely any mist comes out.

The manual is clear about it: use distilled water to limit mineral build-up. RO water does the job equally well, and many growers already have it for their nutrient solution. Tap water is possible, but then periodic descaling belongs in your maintenance, which is what the supplied brush is in the box for.

Two more things from the same manual that easily go wrong: do not pour water into the central pipe, only into the tank, and do not run the hose in a U-bend. Condensation collects in a sagging hose, and it either blocks the mist or runs back into the unit.

Setting it up: where the mist should go

Two nozzle heads are included and they do different jobs. The elbow head sends a directed stream one way, which is what you use to push mist into a tent or a corner. The five-way head spreads it all round, which suits the middle of a room.

The supplied pipe and base raise the outlet. That matters more than it looks: mist leaving at floor level settles on the first cold surfaces it meets, and those are your pots and your floor rather than the air around your crop. Raised up, the mist has time to evaporate before it lands anywhere.

Point the outlet upward and keep the hose sloping back toward the unit. Condensation then runs back rather than dripping out of the end onto your floor.

The probe is on a cable, so the unit can stand beside the room while measuring inside it. Hang the probe at canopy height and not next to the outlet: a probe sitting in the mist measures the mist and switches off too early.

Maintenance not to skip

The transducer plate is the part scale attacks. Give it a moment with the brush at every refill, and empty the tank if the unit will stand idle: still water in a warm room is a poor idea in something that atomises.

The unit switches itself off when the tank empties, so running dry does no harm. A tank standing full for weeks without running does.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use tap water?
It works, but it leaves scale on your leaves and on the transducer. Distilled or RO water is better; otherwise clean it regularly with the supplied brush.

How long does a 15 litre tank last?
Entirely dependent on the level set and on how dry your space is. At a low level a full tank runs for days; at full output considerably less.

Why must the hose not sag?
Condensation collects in a U-bend. It either blocks the mist or runs back into the unit.

Which nozzle head should I use?
The elbow for a directed stream into a tent, the five-way for all-round distribution in a room.

Where should the probe hang?
At canopy height and out of the mist. A probe measuring the mist itself switches off too early.
