Why 8 inch gains far more than it looks

On paper there is a third between 6 and 8 inches of diameter. In open area the gap is much larger, because an opening is a circle and area grows with the square of the radius. Eight divided by six is 1.33, but squared that is 1.78: an 8 inch opening leaves over three quarters more area free than a 6 inch one.

That counts on the intake side, where the opening is the bottleneck. Your extraction fan pulls air out of the tent and that air has to get back in somewhere. If the intake is tight, the tent builds negative pressure, the fabric sucks inward and your fan works against a resistance you neither see nor measure. A roomier intake costs you nothing in airflow and gives your fan less to do, which is the reason to take this one if your tent has 8 inch ports.

Filter and light blocking

The vent itself does what the smaller one does. A cotton filter stops dust, lint and insects that would otherwise ride in with the incoming air, and the integrated shades keep light from travelling straight through the opening, inward or outward. The opening is adjustable, so you can widen it when you want more air exchange.

Size and fitting

The filter cap measures 4.1 by 25.9 cm and the screw cap 5.1 by 25.9 cm. Only the diameter is larger than on the 6 inch version: the depth is unchanged, so this vent too projects just a couple of centimetres from the tent wall. It twists onto a suitable 8 inch port without tools, and two come in the box.

Frequently asked questions

Will it fit a 6 inch port?
No. There is a separate version for 6 inch; this one is for 8 inch openings.

Is the vent otherwise different from the 6 inch version?
Only in diameter. Filter, shades, adjustable opening, fitting and depth are the same.

Is a larger intake worth it with a small fan?
Yes. The intake does not have to match your fan's rating; roomier is never worse, because resistance you remove is resistance your fan does not have to overcome.

Is there a figure for throughput in cubic metres per hour?
No, AC Infinity do not publish one. The comparison above is about area, not about flow rate.
