Ordering a clamp usually goes wrong at one point: people look at the ducting they have rather than at the flange they want to join.

Measure the flange, not the ducting

A 125 mm clamp belongs to parts with a 125 mm flange. That sounds obvious, but a set-up mixes 100, 125, 150, 160 and 200 mm together, and a reducer changes the size halfway along your run.

So look at the part the clamp has to go around, not at what sits further along. If there is a reducer between your fan and your filter, you need a different size of clamp on either side of it.

A size too large will not grip and a size too small will not close. There is no middle ground with this kind of joint and nothing to adjust.

The seal

Inside the clamp is a 5 mm neoprene strip, compressed as you close it. That takes up the small irregularities between two metal edges which are never perfectly flat.

So keep the edges clean when fitting. Dust or a dent in the flange leaves a gap the seal can no longer bridge, and on an extraction system a gap is where odour escapes.
