Can-Fan Iso-Max 160 Inline Fan 430 m³/h

A 160 mm duct fan built inside a silencer: 430 m³/h on the highest of three speeds, drawing 50 W.

The Iso-Max 160 is not a fan with a silencer behind it. It is a fan inside a silencer. That difference determines what you are buying and how much room it costs.

Built in against bolted on

The usual way to quieten an extraction system is to put a separate silencer in the duct, generally behind the fan. That works, but it addresses noise only after it has been made, and it costs you an extra length of duct, two extra couplings, and two extra places where air rushes past an edge.

On this model the fan sits within the damped shell. Noise is absorbed where it is produced, on both sides of the impeller at once, and there are no separate joints between fan and silencer for fresh flow noise to appear at.

Work out the space as well. This fan is 678 mm long, which looks like a lot for a 160 mm connection. Set an ordinary duct fan beside it with a separate silencer behind, though, and you are worse off in practice: those two plus the coupling between them want more duct run than this single unit.

Three speeds, no controller

Three airflow settings are available: 340, 390 and 430 m³/h. You select them with the switch on the unit itself.

Do not connect an external speed controller to this. Can states so explicitly for the three-speed versions of the Iso-Max. It is not the same throughout this brand, so if you add another model later, check it per model rather than assuming the rule travels with it.

Build

The housing is entirely metal with a special foam fitted inside it to absorb noise. Metal makes more sense than plastic here: the shell is large, it has to hold its shape with the foam inside, and it carries the fan itself.

The motor holds a thermal switch that cuts out at excessive working temperature. Mounting brackets are supplied.
