A 50 cm silencer with 250 mm flanges, for ventilation systems on large ducting.

At 250 mm you are in the range where the fan itself is already substantial and where noise therefore does not disappear on its own. This silencer is built for that, and at 50 cm it is longer than the smaller versions.

What damping costs you in pressure

A silencer is a length of duct with filling around it, and every length of duct adds resistance. At this size that is no disaster, but it is something to allow for in advance rather than discover afterwards.

The practical order is: work out how much air your space needs, add what your carbon filter costs in resistance, and only then add the silencer. Anyone who picks a fan on its free air figure and afterwards hangs both a filter and a silencer on it will be structurally short.

Seen the other way, a silencer is how you gain quiet without turning the fan down. Turning down costs you air; a silencer costs a little pressure but leaves most of the output standing.

Build and placement

The casing is galvanised sheet steel and inside it is mineral wool, absorbing sound energy from the air passing through. The flanges are fixed to the casing with screws and rivets.

Fit it behind the fan, behind a volume controller, or at an inlet grille. At this size the mounting point is a consideration in itself: half a metre of steel with filling inside is not a part to leave dangling from ducting.

Frequently asked questions

Why is this one longer than the smaller models?
Larger ducts need a longer section to achieve the same effect.

Should I turn the fan down instead of fitting a silencer?
Turning down costs airflow. A silencer largely leaves it and costs some pressure.

What do I hang it from?
A load-bearing structure, not the ducting.

Will it fit any 250 mm duct?
Compatible 250 mm parts, coupled with clamps.
