Can-Lite 300

The Can-Lite 300 sits in the middle of the plastic Can-Lite range: 45 cm long, 2.5 kg, and rated at 300 m³/h in practice and 330 technically. In an 80 by 80 or 100 by 100 tent running a single lamp, this is usually the size that fits.

Within this range you buy capacity with length and nothing else

Line the three plastic Can-Lite filters up and only one thing changes. The 150, the 300 and the 425 all measure 14.5 cm across and all carry a carbon bed 2.5 cm thick. What differs is length: 25, 45 and 60 cm. And with it the amount of carbon: 0.7, 1.2 and 1.6 kg.

That is more logical than it looks. In these filters air travels from outside to inside, straight through the carbon jacket. How thick that jacket is sets how long the air spends in the carbon; how long the cylinder is sets how much surface takes part. Can keeps the thickness constant so contact time stays constant, and stretches the cylinder to admit more air. Filtration per cubic metre is therefore the same across the range. Only the number of cubic metres goes up.

The practical consequence: choose your size on your fan and your room, not on the idea that a bigger filter filters better. It does not. It keeps filtering for longer, because there is more carbon to saturate.

Fans Can names for it

Can lists nine fans against this filter, among them the Can-Fan RK 125/310 and the RK 125LS/370. The 125 mm size is the usual one here: it delivers enough air to reach 300 m³/h without pushing past the technical 330.

Frequently asked questions

Does the 300 filter better than the 150?
Not per cubic metre of air. The carbon bed is 2.5 cm on both, so the air gets the same contact. The 300 handles more air and lasts longer before the carbon saturates.

What duct size do I need?
100 or 125 mm, with the flange chosen to match. At 125 mm you have less resistance, which at this airflow noticeably lowers the speed your fan has to run.

Can I hang it horizontally?
Yes. The carbon is held in the bed and does not settle out. Do make sure the weight hangs from two points rather than from the duct clamp alone.

Why are there two capacities?
300 is what Can works to in practice, 330 is the technical maximum. Choose your fan on the practical figure and you keep margin for the resistance of bends and ducting.
