Can-Lite 425S

The Can-Lite 425S delivers exactly the same airflow as the Can-Lite 425: 425 m³/h in practice, 476 technically. Everything around it differs. It stands 35 cm tall instead of 60, measures 20 cm across instead of 14.5, is made of steel rather than plastic, and carries a fixed 150 or 160 mm flange.

Same air, different shape

Two filters with the same airflow and completely different dimensions sounds odd, but it follows from how these filters work. Air passes through the carbon jacket, so what counts is the surface of that jacket. You can get that surface from length or from circumference. The 425 takes length: narrow and 60 cm long. The 425S takes circumference: wide and 35 cm short.

So this is not a choice between better and worse but between two shapes. The question is which one fits your space and matches your ducting:

• Short on height, with the filter hanging in a tent below the lamp, and the 425S wins with 25 cm less length.
• Short on width, or needing to pass the filter through a narrow opening, and the 425 wins with 5.5 cm less diameter.
• Already running 150 or 160 mm and the 425S connects directly, with no reducer.
• Running 100 or 125 mm and the 425 is the logical choice.

What the steel version adds

It holds 1.9 kg of carbon against 1.6 kg in the plastic 425, on the same 2.5 cm bed. More carbon at the same airflow means it takes longer to saturate. Total weight rises to 4 kg against 3.2 kg, so allow for a slightly stronger hanging point.

The flange here is built into the housing. That saves a separate part and gives a tight, airtight transition, but it fixes the duct size at 150 or 160 mm.

Fans Can names for it

Can lists thirteen fans against this filter. At the top are the Q-Max 150/555 and 160/560, followed by the Iso-Max 150/410 and 160/430 and the Max-Fan 150/425. The Iso-Max models are acoustically insulated, which on this pairing is the difference between an audible and an unobtrusive extraction.

Why take this over the standard 425?
For the duct size and the height. If you run 150 or 160 mm it connects directly. And it is 25 cm shorter, which counts inside a tent.

Does it last longer than the plastic 425?
It holds 1.9 kg of carbon against 1.6 kg at the same airflow. That is more carbon to saturate, so in practice it takes longer before you replace it.

Can I reduce the flange to 125 mm?
Only with a reducer, and that adds resistance. If you are on 125 mm, take the plastic Can-Lite 425 instead.

Does it filter better because it is steel?
No. The steel sets the shape and the rigidity, not the filtration. Filtration comes from the carbon bed, and that is 2.5 cm on both.
