Can-Lite 800

The Can-Lite 800 is 33 cm long. The Can-Lite 600 is 47.5 cm long. And yet the 800 moves two hundred cubic metres an hour more. That is not a mistake in the table, it is how these filters work.

Surface counts, not length

In a cylindrical carbon filter the air travels inward through the jacket. How much air can pass at once depends on the surface of that jacket, and that surface is circumference times height. Circumference grows with diameter, so a wider filter gains surface far faster than a longer one does.

The 600 measures 20 cm across and makes up for it with length: 47.5 cm. The 800 goes to 30 cm across and therefore needs only 33 cm of height. Half again as wide means half again as much surface per centimetre of height, and length is what you get back.

On top of that the carbon bed is thicker again here: 5 cm against 3.5 cm on the 600. More surface and a deeper bed together give 800 m³/h in practice and 880 technically, out of a filter a head shorter than the model below it.

In practice that is exactly what you want in a tent where height has run out. A 33 cm filter hangs under a lamp where 47.5 cm no longer fits, and you give up nothing for it.

Three flange sizes

This is the only Can-Lite filter supplied in three duct sizes: 160, 200 or 250 mm. That suits both an installation you are growing out of a smaller filter and a system already running 250 mm. Can names twenty-three suitable fans here, more than for any other model in the range. Frequently asked questions

How can a shorter filter handle more air?
Because it is wider. Filter surface is circumference times height, and at 30 cm across every centimetre of height gives half again as much surface as it does at 20 cm.

Which flange size should I choose?
The size of your existing ducting. If you still have a free choice, take 200 or 250 mm: the wider the duct, the less resistance and the more quietly your fan runs.

Does it suit a 120 by 120 tent?
On airflow that is ample, and 33 cm of height is helpful. Do watch the 30 cm diameter, which is wider than the filters in the smaller range.

Is it much heavier than the 600?
5 kg against 4 kg. The difference is mostly the 3.4 kg of carbon, against 2.2 kg in the 600.
