150 or 160: the two sizes that get mixed up

This is the one place in the range where two sizes sit close enough to confuse, and it goes wrong often because both appear in the same installation.

The reason is historical. 150 mm is a metric duct size; 160 mm belongs to six inches. Manufacturers do not all pick the same one: some filters and fans carry a 150 flange, others 160, and some models take either because the flange sits between the two.

So do not go by what your fan's product name says, measure the flange the ducting has to cover. 150 mm ducting will not go over a 160 mm flange. The other way round it does fit, but with slack you then have to take up with a clamp and tape.

If you are unsure and your installation sits somewhere between, take 160: ducting that is slightly too wide can be closed up, ducting that is too tight cannot.

Frequently asked questions

Will this fit a 160 mm flange?
No. For 160 mm you need the 160 ducting; this is too tight for it.

And on a 125 mm duct?
With a reducer. Clamping oversized ducting straight on will not seal.

How do I know which size my filter has?
Measure the outside of the flange with a tape. That is more reliable than the size in the product name.
