Ducting is a consumable, not a fitting

A fan lasts years and a steel bend lasts more or less forever. Ducting is different, and it helps to expect that from the start.

The inside of an exhaust run catches everything the air carries: dust, plant debris, airborne grease, and in a humid room a thin film of deposit for that dust to stick to. The build-up roughens the wall, and a rough wall offers more resistance than a smooth one.

Cleaning is not a serious option on this type of ducting. You cannot get a brush through without damaging the laminate, and wet cleaning leaves moisture in a wall that is not meant to hold it. Replacing costs less than attempting it.

On top of that the ducting itself wears where it moves or chafes against something, and an old length stops holding its round shape properly after being repositioned a few times.

So a ten metre box is often two installations at once: the current one, and the length that replaces the tired run a few cycles from now.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I replace ducting?
There is no fixed interval. Look at the inside when you disconnect it: dull and dusty means replacing is worthwhile.

Can I rinse it out?
Better not. Moisture in the wall is exactly what you want to avoid, and drying it properly is hard.

Does this apply to the intake run too?
Far less. That one carries clean air and lasts considerably longer.
