This ducting does not insulate sound

That is not a shortcoming, it is a property to factor into your choice, because at this size you will hear it.

An extraction system has two sources of noise. The first is the fan itself, which vibrates and radiates its sound outward through the duct wall. The second is the air: the faster it travels, the more hiss it generates, particularly along the ribs and through every bend.

Ordinary laminate ducting like this stops none of that. The wall is thin and hard, so it passes the sound through almost entirely, and where it rests against something it hands its vibration to the structure as well.

That is fine where the run sits in a plant room, a shed or a cellar. Where it passes a bedroom or runs through a home, this is the component you hear, not the fan.

The answer is insulated ducting such as Sonoconnect, with a glass wool layer around the inner hose, or a silencer directly behind the fan. Both work; insulated ducting solves it along the whole run.
