This size behaves differently in your hands

On paper it is the same ducting as the 102 mm, only wider. In practice it is a different thing to work with, and that surprises people scaling up.

It is considerably stiffer. The steel helix is longer per turn and the wall is larger, so you will not bend it around a corner one handed. A bend needs more room than you are used to, and a tight turn that just about worked at 125 mm simply closes shut here.

It is also heavy in proportion. A long horizontal run at this size hangs with a weight a single strap will not carry, so support it more often and more widely than the small sizes.

And it wants more space around it. Where 125 mm ducting slips past a beam or behind a cabinet, at 254 mm you measure the route out in advance, including the room the bends take up.

Against that, this size gives the lowest air speed for the same volume, so it runs the quietest and most efficiently in the range.
