At this size five metres is often the whole job

At the small diameters five metres is tight and ten is generous. At 254 mm that changes, because installations of this scale are laid out differently.

A system on a 250 mm duct is built around a heavy fan and a large filter, and those are rarely tucked away somewhere. They stand or hang close to the outlet, because you do not hang a twenty-five kilo filter on the far side of the room and then run ten metres of ducting to it.

On top of that, a long run at this size works against itself: the ducting is stiff, every bend needs room, and the weight calls for support along its whole length. Short and straight is not only better for airflow here, it is easier to build.

In practice the run from fan to outside is two to four metres, and this box covers it with a length spare for the intake or for a later change.
