Two speeds against continuous control

A two-position switch looks meagre beside a fan you can set anywhere, but in practice it covers most situations, and it is worth knowing why.

A grow room has broadly two states: the lamp is on or it is off. With the lamp on the heat has to go and you need close to full capacity; with it off only moisture and stale air need to leave and things can be much calmer. That is precisely two settings.

What you get in return is simplicity and reliability. There is no electronics in between to fail, and on each setting the motor runs at a fixed speed it was designed for rather than on a throttled voltage that makes it hotter.

Where you feel the limitation is fine adjustment. If your room falls between the two, low is slightly too little and high slightly too much, leaving a tent that runs cold or dry. To control on temperature rather than on setting, look at the version with a controller.

The backward-curved blades deserve a word. On such a blade the vane curves against the direction of rotation, so air leaves it more gradually. That saves turbulence, and turbulence is both loss and noise.
