A box, or a fan in the duct

At this flow you could achieve the same with a 160 mm inline fan, which is cheaper and smaller. So the question is what a box gives back for that.

The answer is noise, and it goes further than a thicker wall. An inline fan sits inside the duct and is therefore rigidly connected at both ends to the rest of your installation. Everything it vibrates goes into the ducting and radiates along its whole length. A box hangs on its own, and the case around it is lined inside, so the impeller's noise is caught before it leaves the case.

On top of that, the motor in this version sits on shock absorbers, so its vibration does not run straight into the steel case.

The second advantage is pressure. See the 250 for the reason: a centrifugal fan holds its output against the resistance of a carbon filter where an inline fan falls away.

There are drawbacks too. A box is bulky, weighs 10 kg here, and needs somewhere to hang or stand. And it costs more. For a short run with no filter an inline fan is fine; as soon as a filter is attached and it has to be quiet, the box wins.
