What makes a softbox a softbox

It is one thing, and it is worth knowing exactly which, because it is the difference you are paying for.

In an ordinary fan box the blower is fixed to the case. However well that case is insulated, the motor is in contact with it, and a running motor always vibrates a little. That vibration travels through the fixing into the panel, the panel resonates along with it and radiates the sound like a soundboard. That is the hum you still hear through a wall long after the air noise has gone.

In a softbox the blower hangs in rubber, with no rigid connection to the case. The rubber deforms under the vibration and turns it into heat instead of passing it on. What never reaches the case cannot be radiated by the case.

So the distinction is not more insulation, it is a different mounting. Insulation in the wall deals with sound travelling through air; the rubber mounting deals with sound travelling through material. Those are two separate routes, and the second is the one you hear in the next room.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the same as an insulated box?
No. Insulation is in the wall; this mounting is under the motor. A softbox has both.

Will I really notice the difference?
Mostly on hum travelling through floors and walls. The air noise is unchanged.

The box comes with flanges and plug and hangs or stands like the ordinary steel box.
