It is at lower speeds that this pays off

Almost everyone puts an extractor on a speed controller, since you rarely need full flow all year. What few people expect is that a throttled fan is often more audible than one running flat out, and that is exactly the situation where a rubber mounting earns its money.

The reason lies in how a simple controller works. It does not smoothly lower the voltage but cuts pieces out of the mains sine wave. The motor no longer receives a smooth drive but a series of small kicks, a hundred times a second. The speed drops, but the motor vibrates more as it does, and that vibration sits in a low frequency range that travels through walls and floors very well.

In an ordinary box that vibration runs straight into the case. In this version the blower hangs in rubber, and rubber catches exactly this kind of vibration before it reaches the panel.

In short: the more you intend to throttle, the more a softbox gives you. If you always run flat out, the gap to an ordinary insulated box is smaller.
