A 125 mm inline fan with an ebm-papst EC motor, built-in temperature control and a maximum airflow of 680 m³/h. Power draw runs from 0 to 170 watts.

A motor that draws what the job asks

The most striking figure here is not the 680 but the range of nought to a hundred and seventy watts, because that is exactly what separates an EC motor from the usual alternating current one.

A classic fan motor runs at mains frequency and draws much the same whatever you do. Turn it down with a dimmer and you cut pieces out of the mains voltage: speed falls, but consumption falls far less, and the motor gets hotter and rougher for it.

An EC motor works the other way. It first converts the mains to direct current and switches its own coils electronically, so speed is controlled directly. Ask for half the air and it draws roughly a quarter to a third of the power, since power required rises with the cube of speed.

Practically that means this. On its lowest setting this unit costs almost nothing to run, and since extraction rarely needs to run flat out for most of the year, that is the setting it sits at most. The speed also stays smooth, which saves vibration and therefore noise.

The backward-curved blades belong to the same picture: they move air with less resistance than a straight blade.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a separate controller?
No, temperature control is built into the housing.

Why 680 m³/h on 125 mm?
That is exceptional for the size. Make sure your filter and ducting can take it.

Does it really use almost nothing at the lowest setting?
Power required rises with the cube of speed, so half the speed is roughly an eighth of the power.
