Bypass: air that goes around the carbon

On a carbon filter more goes wrong past the carbon than in it. That is what an anti-bypass construction exists to prevent, and it is worth understanding where the leak sits.

A filter is a cylinder of carbon between two perforated walls, closed by a plate top and bottom. The air should pass through that layer from outside to inside. But anywhere the carbon bed does not meet those plates completely there is a gap, and a gap offers a thousand times less resistance than five centimetres of carbon. That is where the air goes.

Such a leak is not partial. Once a path exists with far less resistance, a substantial share of your airflow takes it, and that air arrives on the other side entirely unfiltered. Your filter can be practically new and still pass odour.

So Rhino seals the top and bottom plates onto the carbon bed by machine, leaving no room for air to go around. The conical internal base belongs to the same idea: it guides air evenly through the full height rather than letting it crowd at the bottom.

Practical point: check your own connection on the same principle when fitting. A filter perfectly sealed inside does not help if the ducting sits half beside it.

Frequently asked questions

What exactly is bypass?
Air going past the carbon instead of through it, via a gap with far less resistance.

Would I notice bypass?
Only by the smell. The filter looks normal and the airflow even feels better.

How do I connect the ducting properly?
Over the full flange, with a clamp all round and no kink in the ducting at the joint.
