What 1050 m² per gram means

This carbon is rated at an active surface of 1050 square metres per gram. The figure sounds impossible and it is the most interesting thing there is to say about activated carbon.

Activated carbon is treated until it is riddled inside with a network of pores, down to molecular scale. Every one of those pore walls counts as surface. A single gram, roughly a teaspoon, therefore has an internal surface on the order of a fifth of a football pitch. A filter holding two kilos of carbon reaches a surface you would express in square kilometres.

That is necessary because adsorption is a surface process. Odour molecules are not sucked up the way a sponge takes water; they stick to a wall they happen to pass. More wall means more room, and the longer it takes before everything is occupied.

It also explains why a spent filter looks exactly like a new one. Everything happens inside those pores, and nothing changes on the outside.

The dust sleeve around it protects precisely this. Dust landing on the carbon closes off pore mouths, and then the surface is still there but the air can no longer reach it. The sleeve is washable, so you take it off now and then rather than replacing it.
