There is glass wool around it, and it stays where it belongs

This is the question this ducting raises most often, and it is a fair one: there is a blanket of glass wool around it, and the inner hose is deliberately perforated. So why do those fibres not end up in the air you breathe?

Because a separate layer sits between the inner hose and the wool: a closed film, called a barrier in this type. That film is airtight and fibre tight, yet acoustically almost invisible. Sound waves pass through it into the wool; loose fibres do not come back through it.

The consequence for fitting matters more than the theory: that barrier has to stay intact. If you cut the ducting to length, cut with a knife rather than something that drags the layers apart, and finish the end with aluminium tape so the wool is closed off at the cut.

A neatly finished end is not cosmetic on this type of ducting. It is what keeps the wool inside the construction.

Frequently asked questions

Will glass fibres get into my grow room?
Not from undamaged ducting with finished ends. The closed film between wool and airflow exists for exactly this.

What do I cut it with?
A knife for the layers and side cutters for the helix. Tape the end afterwards.

Should I wear gloves?
While cutting, sensibly yes, since the wool is briefly exposed at the cut.
