Insulated flexible ventilation ducting of 127 mm, by the running metre. A perforated inner hose wrapped in glass wool with a laminate outer sleeve, for places where plain ducting passes too much noise.

The first few metres after the fan do most of the work

You rarely need to run a whole route in insulated ducting, which is exactly why this is sold by the metre.

Noise starts at the fan and weakens as it travels further down the duct. The loudest point in your installation is therefore the section straight after the fan, and that is where insulated ducting gives you the most. Put two or three metres there and you take the sharpest peak out before the noise travels into the rest of the run.

The second spot worth it is where the duct crosses a room you would rather not hear it in: past a bedroom, along a hallway, or in the last few metres before it leaves the building, since that is where the noise reaches the neighbours too.

In between, where the duct passes through a shed or a plant room, plain ducting is fine. That way you pay for insulation only where it does something.

Frequently asked questions

What is the least I need to hear a difference?
One metre already does something, but the gap between one and three metres is large. If you can choose, take three.

Can I join it to plain ducting?
Yes, with a connector and clamps. Make sure the insulation sleeve is taped properly at the transition.

Is this the same as a silencer?
It works on the same principle, absorbing sound in a porous layer. A silencer does it in a short, thicker housing.
