Ten metres of insulated ventilation ducting in 160 mm, in one box. This ducting insulates acoustically and thermally, and the second half of that is easily overlooked.

Condensation forms against the wall, not in the air

Air from a grow room is warm and carries a lot of moisture. As long as it stays warm, that moisture stays vapour. Cool the air below its dew point and the moisture drops out as water.

In uninsulated ducting that happens on the inside of the wall, because that is the coldest surface the air meets. If your run crosses a cold loft or follows an outside wall, in winter that wall is considerably colder than the air inside it, and moisture condenses continuously.

Which gives three problems at once. Water collects at the lowest point and blocks the flow. Moisture wicking out through the seams stains ceilings. And permanently wet material starts to smell.

Insulation solves it by keeping the inner wall near the temperature of the air passing through. The wool sits between the cold outside air and the duct, so the wall stays close to the air temperature and the dew point is never reached.

Which makes insulated ducting the right choice on a cold route even if noise is no concern to you at all.

Frequently asked questions

Does insulation stop condensation completely?
At a normal temperature difference, yes. In extreme cold with very humid air some can still form.

Does the intake need insulating too?
Only if you carry cold outside air through a warm room, since moisture then forms on the outside.

Does it help against heat loss?
Yes, that is the same property. With heated air you keep the warmth in the duct longer.
