The mistake that makes the insulation worthless

Insulated ducting often gets connected as though it were plain ducting: push the whole bundle over the flange and put one clamp around it. That does not work, and it is the commonest fitting error with this type.

The ducting is two parts that have to be fixed separately. The inner hose is the air duct: slide that over the flange and clamp it, exactly as you would with plain ducting. The insulation and outer sleeve go over the top and are only then pulled across and taped.

Clamp the insulation blanket in without connecting the inner hose separately, and you are trying to make an airtight joint through a blanket of wool. It will never seal. You lose air at every connection, and because the leak sits under the sleeve you see nothing of it.

So the order is: inner hose onto the flange, clamp it, pull the insulation over, then the outer sleeve neatly across the joint and taped all round with aluminium tape.

Do I need two clamps per connection?
The one on the inner hose matters most functionally. A second around the outer sleeve keeps everything tidy and in place.

Aluminium tape. It holds through temperature swings; ordinary tape lets go.

May the insulation be pushed back at the joint?
Yes, slide it back far enough to reach the inner hose properly, then pull it over the connection again.
