Noise escapes by two routes

On an installation this size noise is rarely a detail, and it helps to know there are two independent routes by which it leaves your space. They need different answers, and treating only one leaves half the problem.

The first route is along the duct with the air, until it emerges at the outlet. That is the noise your neighbour hears and that is audible outside your building. Absorption handles it: insulated ducting or a silencer in the run, between fan and exit.

The second route is straight through the duct wall, in every room that duct passes through. Plain ducting is thin and hard and radiates the fan's noise along its whole length, like a long loudspeaker. That is the noise you hear in the next room, even where the duct only passes by.

This ducting addresses both at once, and that is the argument for insulated ducting over a separate silencer. A silencer sits in one place and works on the first route only. The insulation runs the whole length and damps the radiation through the wall as well, exactly where the duct crosses a room you want quiet.

Frequently asked questions

Silencer or insulated ducting?
A silencer works on the noise leaving the duct. Insulated ducting does that too and also damps radiation through the wall.

Can I combine them?
Yes, and with a heavy fan that is the most effective arrangement.

Does it help against vibration in the building?
Not directly. Vibration travels through the mounting; decouple that at the fan itself.
