Wood or steel around the blower

We sell this box in steel as well, with the same capacity and the same rubber mounting. The difference is the case, and it does more than hold things together.

A case around a fan has to stop its noise getting out, and there are two ways: absorb the waves, or refuse to vibrate along with them. The foam inside does the first. The wall material does the second, and that is where wood and steel differ.

Steel sheet is thin and stiff. Stiff is useful, but thin means little mass, and a light panel is easily set ringing. Which is exactly why the motor in a steel box is always decoupled: let it touch the panel and it sounds like a drum.

12 mm MDF is the opposite: heavier per square metre and damping in itself, since the pressed wood fibres turn vibration into heat rather than passing it on. A wooden panel rings for less time than a steel one, which you hear as a duller sound rather than a singing one.

That also explains the weight. This box is fifteen kilos where the steel version of the same size is ten, on identical external dimensions. Those five kilos are the damping part.
