What an angle costs
Every change of direction in a duct costs pressure, and that pressure comes from your fan. Air has mass and wants to go straight. Force it through ninety degrees in one step and the flow hits the outer wall, breaks up, and forms an eddy that shrinks the effective cross section. The duct is as wide as ever, but less air fits through it.
At 45 degrees that deflection is half as sharp and the flow stays attached far better. That is the whole difference between this piece and a T: same function, less loss. On a tight installation, or a long run that already has plenty of bends, that is the difference between enough extraction and not quite enough.
The same rule holds everywhere in the run: two gentle bends beat one sharp one, and half a metre of extra ducting spent on opening a bend out pays for itself.
