Beige, and that is a design decision

Almost every grow tent is black on the outside. That makes technical sense, since black absorbs any light that does get through the canvas. It has one side effect: a two-metre black cube looks like equipment in a living space, and that is exactly what you do not want in a spare room or a studio flat.

Ferna makes the outer layer beige. The light-tightness comes from the vinyl middle layer, so the outside does not have to be black to do its job. That is the whole trick: by moving the function to the core, the visible layer is free to simply look unremarkable.

What that is worth depends on your situation, and it is fair to say so. If your tent lives in a shed or a cellar, you are buying nothing here. If it stands in a room you also live in, where visitors come, or in a flat where you cannot spare every square metre, this is the difference between a tent you hide and one that is allowed to just stand there.

A practical bonus: beige plastic fabric wipes clean easily and shows dust less than matt black.

What you connect to

According to the manufacturer's specification this size has round drawstring ports across four sides:

• Left: 1 × 100 mm, 1 × 162 mm, 1 × 203 mm
• Right: 1 × 100 mm, 1 × 162 mm
• Back: 1 × 102 mm, 1 × 162 mm
• Roof: 1 × 254 mm

Those sizes are converted inches: 162 mm is 6.4 inches, 203 mm is 8 inches and 254 mm is 10 inches. In practice a 162 mm opening works perfectly well with 150 mm ducting, drawstring pulled in. The 254 mm roof port is the widest and the logical place for your extraction.

Frequently asked questions

Is beige less lightproof than black?
No. The light-tightness lives in the vinyl middle layer, not in the colour of the outside.
