White reflects differently from silver

Almost every grow tent is silver inside: mylar, mirrored, aimed at maximum return. Ferna uses white vinyl, and that is not a cheaper version of the same thing but a different kind of reflection.

A mirrored surface returns light at the same angle it arrives. That keeps a lot of light in the tent, but it also keeps the beam together: wherever the mirror points, a bright spot lands.

A matt white surface scatters instead of mirroring. The light that comes back leaves in every direction at once. Slightly more is lost, but what returns arrives more evenly. Low in your canopy and in the corners that is the difference that counts, because down there a plant lives on scattered light rather than a direct beam.

There is a practical benefit too: white vinyl cannot crease into focal points. Mylar that starts to wrinkle, and it will after a few runs, makes hot spots exactly where the fold points. A matt wall cannot do that.

At this size it matters most. In a 60 × 60 cm tent every leaf is close to a wall, so a greater share of the light reaching your plant is reflected light rather than direct light.

The canvas is three-layer: beige 600D plastic fabric outside, lightproof vinyl in the middle and white vinyl inside. The frame is white powder-coated steel with cast plastic corners. A waterproof insert floor, fabric straps and separate roof bars with hooks are included. The side ventilation openings have insect mesh and close with velcro.

Frequently asked questions

Is white worse than mylar?
Different rather than worse. Mylar returns slightly more light; white spreads it more evenly and cannot form focal points when creased.

Can I clean the interior?
Yes, vinyl wipes down with a damp cloth. Dirt does show sooner on white than on silver.

What pole diameter does this size use?
Ferna does not publish it for this size. On the larger sizes it is 22 mm.
