The layer in the middle does three jobs at once

Tent canvas is usually described as one material with a coating. On a Ferna it is three layers totalling 0.45 to 0.48 mm, and the one in the middle is the interesting one.

That middle layer is vinyl, and it has three jobs. It is lightproof, so nothing passes in either direction. It is the carrier layer bonding the inner and outer skins together, which is what stops the canvas delaminating where it is pulled tight. And it is odour-tight.

That last one rarely gets a mention of its own, and for many people it is the reason the tent can stand indoors at all. Odour is not light: it does not leak through a gap, it is carried by air. As long as your extraction runs, your tent sits under slight negative pressure and all the air leaves through your filter. But the moment you switch the fan off, or during the minutes your door is open, the canvas itself is the only barrier left.

A canvas that passes odour molecules then leaves you with a room that smells. A vinyl core does not. It is also why you should never judge a tent on filter capacity alone: the filter works when the fan runs, the canvas works always.

Frequently asked questions

Do I still need a carbon filter?
Yes. The canvas holds odour in, but the air you extract goes outside and that has to be filtered.

Will the room smell when I open the tent?
Briefly, yes. The canvas helps again afterwards, but the air inside at that moment escapes when you open it.

What does carrier layer mean?
That the middle layer holds the inner and outer faces together, so the canvas is less likely to delaminate under tension.
