Why a sealed cabinet needs air inlets that were designed

A fabric grow tent leaks air everywhere a little: along zips, through seams, under the edge. A nuisance for light, but it does mean air can always get in. A cabinet with rigid walls and a locking door does not. It is sealed.

That is exactly the intention, and it is also why this cabinet has three air inlets built as a labyrinth. A labyrinth is a passage with bends in it: air passes through without difficulty, light does not, because light travels straight and dies in the bends.

So you get two things at once that normally work against each other. The cabinet stays light-tight through the dark period, and fresh air can still get in.

Negative pressure does the work

The system only works once you fit an extraction fan, and then it works by itself. With the fan running and the doors shut, it pulls more air out of the cabinet than can find its own way in. That creates negative pressure, which continuously draws fresh room air in through the three inlets.

That air is CO₂-rich, which your crop uses, and it is led across the growing area before leaving through the exhaust flange. So you get a directed airflow rather than a cabinet with some movement in it.

Negative pressure has a further consequence that often decides the matter: all air leaving the cabinet goes through your extraction. Put a carbon filter on it and nothing bypasses. In a cabinet that also lost air through gaps, part of the odour would reach the room unfiltered.

Practically: size your extraction large enough to actually build that negative pressure, and keep the doors shut while it runs. An open door cancels the whole principle.

Construction and layout

The walls are PVC/XPS/PVC sandwich panels in an aluminium frame with plastic corner pieces. The interior surface is strongly reflective and wipes clean; the panels also damp sound and temperature swings. The front consists of solid 3 mm PVC wing doors with an aluminium top layer, fitted with locks.

This is the empty version. Lighting, extraction, filtering and irrigation are yours to choose; the cabinet provides a mounting flange, the three inlets, mounting points for one light and a cable gland.
