The exhaust air goes back into the room

With almost any growing setup the first question is where the air goes. A tent with an extraction fan blows out warm, scented air, and it has to go somewhere. Usually that means ducting to a window, a shaft or an adjoining space, and that decides where the tent can stand.

Here that does not arise. The carbon filter sits inside the cabinet, at the front of the ceiling, with the fan mounted directly on it. So air is pulled through the carbon first and only then blown out. What leaves is odourless, and it can go straight back into the room.

You do not have to attach ducting or make an opening to the outside. That removes the main constraint on where a cabinet like this can stand: an internal wall is as good as an external one, and a room without a window works too.

This only holds while the doors are shut. With the fan running and the doors closed, negative pressure builds and no unfiltered air can escape anywhere. Fresh, CO₂-rich air is drawn in through three light-tight inlets along the bottom of the rear wall and pulled diagonally up past the plants to the filter in the ceiling.

The filter is a consumable

Activated carbon fills up. In continuous use the filter is saturated after roughly a year and has to be replaced. You can do that yourself, and G-Tools publishes an instruction video for it.

Budget for that replacement in your running costs. It is the only structurally recurring item on this cabinet, and it is also the part odour control depends on entirely: a saturated filter looks exactly like a new one and does nothing at all.

What fits, and what is included

On 0.35 m² there is room for roughly nine 6.5 litre pots or four 11 litre pots. If you would rather not water by hand, there is a 3-in-1 growing system matched to this cabinet size.

The fan is a 185 m³/h G-Tools mini fan mounted in an acoustically insulated silencer; with the doors closed G-Tools quotes roughly 45 dB at 1 metre. Its capacity is enough to cool lighting systems up to 250 W.

The ceiling carries two mounting points for a fixture, with a Light Hanger pulley set to adjust the height steplessly. The grow light itself is not included, so you can choose it to suit your method.

The WiFi Smartbox has four sockets. Two are permanently live, one of which feeds the fan. The other two are programmable through an app for the lighting and a watering system. Without wifi you switch them on permanently and use an ordinary timer.
