It carries weight without fixing the height

A branch bending under the weight of its own top can be helped two ways: tied down, or hung up. The difference looks small and is not.

Tie a branch to a stake or to a net and you fix it at the height you tied it. The plant keeps growing, the branch wants to rise, and the tie stays where it was. Then it cuts in, or the branch grows crookedly around it, and you are back every week to loosen and reset it.

A yo-yo works the other way round. Inside the housing is a spring mechanism holding the line under constant tension. Pull the line and it unwinds; release it and it draws back until taut. Hook it to a branch and the line carries part of the weight without holding the branch at a fixed height. If the branch grows upward, the line winds back in. If it sags, the line takes the load.

In practice that means you hang it once and then leave it alone. For tops that get heavy in the final weeks, that is the difference between checking daily and doing nothing.

A yo-yo and a scrog net complement each other rather than replacing each other. The net drives the whole canopy to one plane; the yo-yo catches the single heavy branch that breaks through it.

The hook

This version has a small hook. It fits around a thin branch or through the mesh of a net without needing room made for it. Hook it to the branch itself rather than to a leaf or a side shoot, and hang the housing from a roof bar that can carry the weight.
