Count square metres, not pots

A 25 litre pot is not only deeper than a 15 litre one but wider, and it stands in a tray sized around it. Two XL trays side by side therefore take noticeably more floor than two standard trays, and that difference multiplies as soon as you expand.

This is the trade-off you make when laying out a space. In a tent or greenhouse with fixed floor area you can choose: more plants in smaller pots, or fewer plants in larger ones. Both fill the same space; the difference is whether your yield comes from number or from plant size.

Allow for the space beside it too

When measuring up, people usually count only the tray. Include working space: you need to reach every tray to check it runs dry, and to lift a pot to look under the Root Control Disc. A layout you cannot get into is a layout you will not check.

Mind the height as well. A 25 litre pot sits taller than a 15 litre one, which changes the distance to your lamp and the headroom beneath it.

Two independent cycles

As with any 1Pot system each pot has its own valve, so the two plants regulate separately. Larger pots make that independence more useful still, because large plants differ most in what they drink.
