The two pot sizes interchange without modification

The Auto8 tray takes both 8.5 and 15 litre pots, and you can switch between them with no adjustment to the tray. No different valve, no different pipework, no adaptors.

That makes this unusually flexible for a tray system. You buy the tray once and decide per crop what goes in it: eight large plants in 15 litres, or eight smaller ones in 8.5 if you are running a short cycle. In most growing systems that choice is fixed in the hardware; here it is not.

When to go for 15 litres

When plants need to reach final size and run a whole season or a full flowering period. Fifteen litres gives nearly double the root volume and therefore a larger buffer: the tray dries back more slowly, moisture swings less, and you have more slack in warm weather.

If you stick to short crops, herbs or leafy greens, 8.5 litres is more practical and saves considerably on substrate: eight 15 litre pots is 120 litres of medium against 68 for the smaller size.

What stays the same

One valve for the whole tray, so eight pots sharing a water level and cycle and therefore needing to be comparable. The lid keeping light and debris out. And the moulded base limiting standing water where no pot sits.
