The Easy2Grow starter set for 2 pots is a complete working watering system: tray, pots, tank, pipework and fittings. You fill the tank and everything after that happens by itself, with no power, no timer and nothing to calibrate. The reason it works sits in one component, and it is worth knowing exactly how it behaves.

What the AQUAvalve5 does, step by step

The valve in the tray is not an ordinary float valve. It is a dual-float assembly with a vacuum lock, and it repeats the same four phases.

Filling. Solution runs from the tank to the valve by gravity. The valve opens and lets the tray fill to a fixed 20 millimetre layer. No more, no less.

Closing. At that level the upper float rises and traps air inside the valve body. That trapped air pushes the inner float against the inlet, and at the same time the valve pulls itself down against the tray floor with suction. The inlet is now shut.

Uptake. The medium wicks the water upward from below to the roots. The level in the tray drops, so the upper float drops with it, but the valve does not open: the vacuum holds it closed.

Running dry and refilling. Only when the tray is completely empty does the level fall below the valve and break the suction. Air enters, the vacuum collapses, and the valve opens for the next fill.

Why that vacuum is the whole idea

Without the lock the valve would top up as soon as the level dropped a few millimetres, and your plant would stand permanently in water. Because the valve waits until the tray is dry, a dry-back phase occurs between every two waterings. In that phase air reaches the roots.

That is not a detail. Roots need oxygen as much as water, and a permanently saturated pot suffocates them; that is exactly what goes wrong with overwatering. The system produces that alternation automatically, and per plant, because every tray has its own valve and its own rhythm.

Bottom feeding changes how you work

Two things that differ from hand watering.

Do not connect a plant immediately. Water by hand from above for the first seven to ten days, until roots have developed and reach into the lower layer. Only then connect the pot; before that, water arriving from below will not reach the roots.

Never let the tank run completely dry. If it empties, air enters the line and the valve loses its vacuum, after which it no longer opens reliably. This is the most common reason a system stops working and it is entirely avoidable: top up while about a third remains.

Complete here really does mean complete

That is not a given in this range. The larger Easy2Grow systems ship without a tank, because at that size you choose your own reservoir. This set includes the 47 litre tank with lid, along with the tank fitting and its water filter. You need nothing else to start.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need power? No. The system runs entirely on gravity, with no pump, timer or plug.

Must the tank stand higher than the pots? At least level with the trays and preferably a little higher; gravity does the work.

How do I know the valve is working? A healthy cycle lets the tray run completely dry before refilling. If it tops up while water still stands, the air seal is leaking.

Can I keep watering from above? Only during the first week, before you connect the pot. After that, no.

Can I extend it later? Yes, with an Easy2Grow two-pot expansion set on the same line.
