The Easy2Grow set for 4 pots is two trays of two pots each, with a 47 litre tank. That figure of two per tray is not a packaging choice: it decides how your system behaves, and it is the main difference from the dearer systems where every pot has its own valve.

What happens when two plants share one valve

Every Easy2Grow tray has one AQUAvalve5. It fills the tray to a 20 millimetre layer, closes with a vacuum lock, and reopens only when the tray is completely empty. That is exactly what you want: a dry-back phase between every watering, so roots get air rather than standing permanently wet.

But that cycle applies to the whole tray, so to both pots together. The two plants literally share the same layer of water, and the moment of refilling is set by when the last of it is gone, not by what each plant needs individually.

Why you group plants of similar size

As long as those two drink at roughly the same rate this works well, and it is the most economical way to build: half as many valves as pots.

Put a large and a small plant together and it skews. The large one takes most of the water, but the tray only runs dry when all of it is gone. Meanwhile the small plant stands in moisture longer than suits it, and its dry-back phase shortens or disappears. You lose precisely the advantage the system exists for.

The fix is simple: group plants of similar size and type per tray. Between trays it makes no difference, because each has its own valve and its own cycle. If you want independent control per plant, look at a system with one valve per pot.

Four pots and one tank

Both trays hang off the same 47 litre tank, included here along with the tank fitting and its water filter. The filter is not decoration: the valve inlet is narrow enough to block with sediment or algae, and a silted valve stops refilling.

Top up while about a third remains. If the tank empties completely, the line draws air and the valve loses its vacuum seal, after which it no longer opens reliably.

Can I mix crops? Within one tray, better not if they differ sharply in size or water demand. Between trays it makes no difference.
