Sixteen pots in four rows of four, holding 255 litres. The first system in the range with an adjustable water pump, and that is not a detail.

The Growrilla Hydroponic System 2.0 RDWC 16 swaps the fixed HR-series pump for an Eden 135, adjustable anywhere between 300 and 2000 L/h. A V60 air pump feeds all sixteen air stones. Recommended growing area is 240 by 240 centimetres.

At this size nothing can be taken for granted. Sixteen pots means a long path for the water, a lot of joints, and roots that seriously get in the way towards the end of a grow. That is precisely why the adjustable pump is there.

Flow rate: why adjustable matters here

On a small system you switch the pump on and never think about it again. In a 255-litre system with sixteen pots the situation changes so much over a grow that a single fixed setting no longer serves.

At the start there are cuttings in it. The pots are practically empty, water moves freely, and full flow achieves nothing extra. What it does do is put heat into the water: a water pump is an electric motor sitting underwater, and all the energy it consumes ends up as heat in your solution. With 116.5 watt of pumps running day and night, that is not a negligible amount.

At the end of flower it is the reverse. Sixteen mature root masses fill the pots, hang into the transfer ports and choke the flow. Now you want everything the pump can deliver, otherwise the pots at the end of the run fall behind those near the controller, and the plants there will visibly behave differently from the rest.

Halfway through flower, check that every pot is still pulling its weight. Feel the transfer ports for movement, or simply put a hand on the water in the last pot of the run. If it differs noticeably from the first, there is a restriction somewhere.

What root mass does to a large system

This is where it helps to know how these systems actually block up. It is not dirt and it is not salts: it is the roots themselves.

A healthy DWC root grows towards the flow, because that is where the oxygen is. Which means roots actively grow into the transfer ports, and with sixteen pots you have a great many of those. The 32 mm pipework is generously sized for it, but by the end of a long flower it is no longer empty.

That is not a defect and it does not have to become a problem, as long as you expect it. Check the transfer ports at each solution change and trim back only what genuinely blocks the passage. Cutting roots costs the plant vigour, so be targeted about it.

Frequently asked questions

What setting should the water pump run at?
There is no fixed setting. Low with young plants, high once root mass narrows the transfer ports, and as low as you can get away with during a warm spell. The table above is a workable starting point.

How much space do I really need?
Allow a 240 by 240 centimetre growing area plus an access path. Sixteen pots in four rows means reaching across to the inner rows, so keep at least one side free to work from.

Won't 255 litres get too warm?
A large volume actually warms more slowly than a small one, but you do have 116.5 watt of pumps putting heat into it day and night. Measure water temperature and keep it below 22 °C; above 24 °C you are at real risk of root rot.

Are the parts the same as on the smaller systems?
Yes. Same 19-litre pots, same 32 mm pipework, same push-fit joints. Spares interchange with the rest of the range.

Why is the footprint missing from the specifications?
The manufacturer's figure is demonstrably wrong. It lists the same footprint as the four-pot system. We would rather publish no measurement than an incorrect one. Get in touch if you need the exact footprint for planning and we will confirm it.
