Where root debris ends up

In a recirculating system all the water flows past every pot and returns to the controller pot, where the pump sends it round again. Whatever comes loose in the pots travels along: bits of root, grains from the net pots, the sludge that builds up on the air stones over a grow.

With six large root masses, quite a lot of that accumulates. Without a filter it ends up in the pump, where it slows the impeller or gradually clogs the inlet. That happens slowly, and the first thing you usually notice is less water circulating while you have changed nothing.

That is why the PRO systems come with a filter in the return line as standard, just before the controller pot. There is a shut-off valve on each side, so you can close the line before you open the filter. Check it regularly, and more often in flowering, when the roots grow fastest and shed the most.

Air stones that keep working cleanly

The same sludge the filter catches also settles on the air stones. Each pot has a 50 millimetre cylindrical stone that gives a lot of fine bubbles, fed by a 30 litre per minute air pump. When the bubbles in one pot become noticeably coarser than in the rest, that stone is due for replacement. Check them whenever you look at the filter.
