Plastic float valve 3/4 "- 20MM

A float valve holds the water level in a tank or reservoir at a fixed height, with no power, timer or sensor. This compact plastic version has a 3/4 inch connection.

How it works

A float hangs from the valve. With the water high enough, that float presses the valve shut and nothing comes in. When the level falls because your system uses water or it evaporates, the float drops with it, the valve opens, and water runs in until the level is right again.

It is the same mechanism as in a cistern, and the appeal is that there is nothing to fail. No electronics, no power, no setting to drift. The mechanism is its own sensor.

Where it makes the difference

In any system where a falling level is a problem. In hydroponics and aeroponics roots take their position from the water level that stood there while they grew; let that level drop and they end up dry. A float valve holds it.

On a storage tank it saves topping up. Rather than watching the level yourself, you connect the tank to a supply and it refills itself.

Note that a float valve tops up with whatever you connect to it. Working with a nutrient solution, refilling with tap water dilutes your EC. That is usually exactly what you want, since plants take up water faster than salts, but it is worth knowing it happens.
