When fifty is the right number

The arithmetic is simple: one sensor per pot, or four per metre of trough. Fifty sensors is fifty pots, and that is the scale at which reordering singles becomes tedious. It also sits well within what one supply run carries, so this box goes onto a single installation without splitting the line.

At this scale, the setting up is the work

Adjusting one Blumat takes minutes. Fifty takes an afternoon, and it pays to know the order before you start.

Begin at the last sensor on the line and work back. That bleeds the supply hose as you go, which is exactly what you want: air in the line means the sensors further along do not reliably receive water. Per sensor you open until water runs, close until a single drop hangs, then a further quarter turn.

Do the final adjustment the next day. The ceramic needs time to equilibrate with the moisture tension in the root ball, and a sensor fine-tuned immediately after placement is being set against a situation that has not settled. Then walk your rows for one to two weeks and correct where needed, but do not correct constantly: a Blumat that is not dripping as you pass is usually just a Blumat in moist soil.

Maintenance that only counts at numbers

Two things negligible on one sensor that become routine on fifty.

Sensors slowly lose water. After roughly six to eight months, check the water level in the cones and top up where needed. A sensor that empties loses its measurement and starts running wetter or drier than you set it.

Ceramic silts up. Nutrient residues and lime deposit on the porous surface, and the sensor reads through that surface. Clean sensors inside and out with water; crust on the cone can be sanded off. Do it at the end of a crop, alongside flushing the line.

Sensors in this box come with 20 centimetres of drip hose, where the individually sold sensor has 25 and the Maxi 60. For normal pots that is fine. With large containers, bear in mind that the distance from drip point to cone partly sets your calibration: shorter means drier.
