Tropf Blumat maxi Sensor (complete with 60 cm dripper hose + t-piece)

The Tropf Blumat Maxi is the version for large pots: from roughly Ø30 centimetres across and 25 centimetres deep. It comes with 60 centimetres of drip hose and a T-piece, against 25 centimetres on the standard sensor.

Why a big pot needs a longer sensor

A sensor reads moisture at the depth its ceramic cone sits. In a small pot that is effectively the whole root ball. In a pot thirty centimetres or deeper it is not: the top layer dries through evaporation while it stays wet below, or the reverse just after watering. A standard sensor then reads a layer that says nothing about how the roots beneath are doing.

The Maxi reaches further down, so it measures in the zone where the root mass actually is. You notice the difference at the extremes: no soil staying sodden for days after one watering, and no plant looking dry on top while there is plenty further down.

The longer hose is part of it

The 60 centimetre drip hose is not decoration. On a large pot the drip point sits further from the sensor, and that distance is part of the regulation: the further away, the later the sensor closes and the more water goes in.
