A hanging drying net 60 centimetres across with eight layers of polyester mesh, 160 centimetres tall in total. Eight layers over 160 centimetres works out at roughly 20 centimetres of spacing, and that number tells you more about this net than the diameter does.

What spacing actually does

Drying is about air moving past the material and carrying moisture away. Put too much on a layer, or leave too little headroom above it, and the air sits still between the material: the outside dries while the inside stays wet. That is where it goes wrong and where mould starts.

Twenty centimetres is tight. It is enough for loose material in a thin layer: leaf, small flowers, herbs. It is not enough for whole branches or thick flowers, because the material then touches the layer above and you lose the very circulation you bought the net for.

What eight layers are good for

The advantage of eight is vertical capacity on a small footprint. Sixty centimetres across fits almost any tent and costs you no floor space, because it hangs. For anyone who needs to lay out a lot of small material at once, that is exactly right.

The rule to work by: lay one thin layer and leave gaps between the pieces. Eight lightly loaded layers beat four heavily loaded ones. Packing them full costs you more than the extra layers give you.

Hanging and air movement

A drying net does nothing to the air by itself, it only holds material apart. Make sure there is movement in the room, for instance a clip fan blowing past the net rather than into it. Blowing straight in dries the outside too fast, at the cost of scent and colour.

Frequently asked questions

Can I put whole branches in it? Better not. With 20 centimetres between layers, longer material touches the layer above. For branches you want a net with 30 centimetres of clearance.

How full can a layer be? One thin layer with gaps between the pieces. Filling it costs more drying speed than the extra room gains you.

Do I need a fan? Movement in the room helps, but do not aim it at the net. Past it is better than into it.

Will it fit a small tent? Sixty centimetres across fits most tents. Watch the height instead: the net is 160 centimetres and needs to hang free.
