Why a curved blade cuts flush

When you want to remove a leaf at its base, the problem is the angle. A straight blade approaches at a slant, and leaves a small stub behind. That stub dries out, discolours, and is still there after drying. On hand-finished work that is exactly the difference between tidy and sloppy.

A curved blade follows the contour of the stem. You can lay the tip flat against the material and cut at the join itself, leaving nothing. That is the entire reason curved shears exist.

Slicing instead of crushing

There is a second benefit. Because the blades pass each other along a curve, they slice through tissue at an angle rather than compressing it. A blunt or dirty blade crushes the stem, and crushed tissue browns along the cut faces. Sharp and curved gives a clean cut that dries neatly. So keep the blades clean: resin dried onto the steel behaves exactly like blunt steel.

For longer sessions

The handles are rubber covered, which sounds unremarkable until you have been at it for two hours. Bare plastic starts slipping the moment your hands get sticky; rubber does not. The spring takes over the opening. The catch slides on when you are done, protecting the tips and saving your drawer.
