The work that comes first

At harvest most of the volume is not in the fine work, it is in the rough pass. The large leaves have to come off first, and there are a lot of them. Only once they are gone can you see what you are dealing with and start on the detail.

For that first pass you want a straight blade. The full cutting length sits in one line, so you take a leaf stem anywhere in the jaw and cut through without aiming. With a curved shear you have to place the tip each time, which costs a fraction of a second, but you do it hundreds of times.

Two shears, two passes

Most people who do this regularly work with two shears side by side. The straight one for stripping leaf and shortening stems, the curved one for finishing afterwards. That saves time, and it also spares your fine shear: use that one to force through thicker stems and it goes blunt exactly where you need it sharp.

Comfort and storage

The rubber covering holds grip once your hands turn sticky. The spring opens the shear after each cut, leaving your hand only to squeeze. The catch keeps the blades closed in a drawer or toolbox. For small to medium plants this is the workhorse; woody branches are a job for other tools.

Why would I want two shears? Because rough and fine work call for different blade shapes. One shear for everything works, but it takes longer and blunts your fine shear faster.

Can I finish with this one too? You can, but at the join a straight blade is more likely to leave a stub. That is what the curved version is for.
