A sturdy 14 centimetre scissor with 1.8 millimetre thick nickel-plated blades in 2CR13 steel and a soft grip. This is not a trimming scissor, and that is exactly why it belongs in a grow room.

All the cutting that is not about plants

In a grow room you are constantly cutting things that are not plants. Aluminium tape for a ducting joint. Ties and cable ties. Plant netting that needs sizing. Root fabric or ground cover. Sheeting, packaging plastic, a bag of substrate. Every one of them a quick job you do with whatever scissor is nearest.

If that is your trimming shear, you pay for it. Tape makes the blades sticky, cable ties and wire notch the cutting edge, fabric and fleece slowly spread the blades apart. The result is a fine shear that no longer cuts cleanly on plants while still looking perfectly good.

Why thick blades are an advantage here

1.8 millimetres is thick for a scissor this size. For fine plant work that is a drawback: a thick blade will not fit a tight angle and pushes material aside before it cuts. For material with resistance it is precisely what you want, because a thick blade does not flex away when you cut through something stiff. The nickel plating holds tape adhesive slightly less well and makes wiping down easier.

The 5.5 centimetre shank is the length of the cutting section. Short enough to steer, long enough to take a piece of fabric in one pass.

One habit makes the difference

Keep this scissor apart from your plant shears and use it consistently for the other work. That is the whole trick. Two scissors each doing their own job both stay good for years; one scissor doing everything is good at nothing within a season.

Frequently asked questions

Can I trim with it as well? You can, but the blades are too thick for fine work flush against a stem. That is what the cutting shears are for.

What is 2CR13 steel? A stainless steel commonly used for tools that need to be sturdy. It hardens well and holds an edge reasonably long.

Why nickel-plated? It protects against staining and helps glue and dirt come off more easily.

What does shank length mean? The length of the cutting section of the blade, here 5.5 centimetres. The rest of the 14 centimetres is handle.
