Buy the length, do not chain

The temptation with a lead that is too short is to hang an extension off the end. That is how it usually goes wrong in a grow room, for three reasons.

Every joint is another contact resistance and therefore another place that can warm up. Every joint is another point that can vibrate loose or be pulled apart. And a joint lies almost by definition on the floor, exactly where water ends up if something tips over or leaks.

One continuous lead of the right length has none of those three problems. Four metres covers, in most setups, the distance from a device to a socket on the other side of the room.

Where to run it

Run the lead along a wall or a bar rather than across the middle of the room, and keep the plug and socket out of the wet zone. Leave some slack at the connection: a lead pulled taut tugs at the terminals.

Frequently asked questions

Why not add an extension lead? Every joint creates heat, can work loose, and almost always ends up on the floor. One continuous lead of the right length is better.

Is four metres too much? Excess length is less of a problem than too little, but do not coil a lead tightly while it is under load.

Can I shorten it? Not without removing the moulded plug, and then you no longer have a moulded plug. In that case buy cable and a fitting plug instead.

Difference from the 2 metre? Length only. Cable and plug are the same.
