A 3 volt lithium coin cell, type CR2032. The most widely used coin cell in the world, and in this range the battery inside your pH meter, your EC meter and your tensiometer.

Three volts, not one and a half

This is the important difference from every other cell on these pages. A CR2032 is lithium and delivers 3 volts. The alkaline button cells that look roughly similar deliver 1.5.

They do not fit each other's holders, which is just as well: a device expecting 3 volts does nothing on 1.5, and the other way round you are asking for trouble. So always read the code on the cell you took out rather than judging by shape. CR means lithium and round, 20 is twenty millimetres across, 32 is 3.2 millimetres thick.

Why lithium wins here

Lithium holds its voltage remarkably flat until close to the end, and loses little charge sitting idle. For a pH or EC meter that is exactly what you want: a slowly sagging supply voltage causes drift in the reading, and you only notice once your measurements have been wrong for a while.

Individually packed

This cell comes one per blister. Keep it in that packaging until use: coin cells short easily against each other or against metal.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use an alkaline button cell instead? No. This gives 3 volts, alkaline button cells 1.5. Always read the code on the old cell.

What does CR2032 mean? CR is lithium and round, 20 is the diameter in millimetres and 32 the thickness in tenths: 20 by 3.2 millimetres.

Why is this one in measuring equipment? Because lithium holds its voltage flat. A sagging supply voltage causes drift in your readings.

How do I store spares? In the blister. Loose in a drawer, coin cells can short against metal.
