This 400 watt metal halide lamp gives cool light at 6000 kelvin, 36,000 lumen and 550 µmol/s. E40 cap, nominally 10,000 hours.

The only lamp here with a PAR figure

Of the nine HID lamps in this range this is the only one for which the manufacturer publishes a PAR value: 550 micromoles per second. Every other is sold on lumens alone. That makes this lamp a useful reference point, because with that one number you can do something lumens will not let you do.

Micromoles per second counts the particles of light a plant can use, and it is the measure LED manufacturers quote. At 550 µmol/s on 400 watts this lamp works out at roughly 1.4 micromoles per joule. A modern LED grow light sits between 2.5 and 3.1. That is the honest answer to how much more efficient LED really is, and it is an answer you can only give because this lamp happens to carry a PAR figure at all.

Why the rest do not publish those numbers is not hard to guess. It has become a selling point that flatters LED and not HID, while lumens look kinder. So nowhere in this range do we set lumens against each other when different lamp types are involved.

For vegetative growth itself this lamp is perfectly suitable: cool light at 6000 kelvin keeps plants compact, and 400 watts covers a decent area.

Frequently asked questions

How does 550 µmol/s compare to an LED?
On 400 watts that is roughly 1.4 µmol/J. A modern LED sits between 2.5 and 3.1.

Why is that figure missing from the other HID lamps?
Because most manufacturers do not publish it for HID. We do not invent it, so we leave it out.

Is this lamp suitable for flowering?
It can do it, but the cool spectrum belongs to vegetative growth. HPS is the usual choice for bloom.

Do I need a special ballast?
A 400 watt ballast rated for metal halide. Check the rating plate.
