This 600 watt metal halide lamp gives cool light at 5500 kelvin and 45,000 lumen, with an E40 cap and a nominal life of 6,000 hours.

Fewer lumens than the 600W HPS, and still the growth lamp

Set this lamp beside the 600 watt HPS from the same range and it looks like no contest: 45,000 lumen against 90,000. Same wattage, half the light. Yet this is the lamp you want during vegetative growth, and that is not a contradiction but a property of the yardstick.

The lumen weighs light by how bright it appears to a human eye, and that eye is most sensitive to yellow and green. Sodium light sits right on top of that and therefore scores exceptionally well. Metal halide light is cooler and bluer, far from the peak, and so loses points for colours a plant does rather more with. The twofold difference is largely in the measurement, not in what arrives at your canopy.

What blue light does to a plant is the real argument. It keeps stems short and the plant compact, exactly what vegetative growth calls for, while a crop spending those weeks under warm sodium light stretches more. That extra length you carry through the rest of the grow.

Do note the life: this lamp is rated 6,000 hours against 10,000 for the two smaller ones in the same range. Plan replacement accordingly.

Frequently asked questions

Why fewer lumens than the 600W HPS?
Because lumens follow the human eye, which weighs yellow and green heavily. The gap is in the measurement, not in what your crop receives.

So why choose this one for growth?
Blue light keeps plants compact. Under warm sodium light they stretch more during those weeks.

Does it last less long than the other two?
Yes, nominally 6,000 hours against 10,000. Account for that when planning replacement.

Can I run it on my HPS ballast?
Only if it is rated for both types. Check the rating plate.
